2 memory tricks.

Flip two toggles in Claude's settings and bring your history over from ChatGPT. Two things, and Claude knows you from your very first message.

Getting started with Claude

Most people open Claude and start typing right away. It remembers nothing. Every time, you start from scratch. Two settings fix that for good.

Trick 1 of 2

Flip two toggles. 30 seconds.

By default, Claude remembers nothing between conversations. Turn on two switches and it starts building up context about you with every chat.

Where to find it in settings

1. Open Settings

On claude.ai, click your avatar in the top right corner → choose Settings.

2. Go to the Capabilities section

In the settings menu on the left, find the Capabilities tab. You'll see a list of toggles there.

3. Turn on both memory toggles

Switch on both toggles related to memory. They let Claude save facts about you and use them in future conversations.

What you get

Claude starts saving important facts as you talk: who you are, what you do, what matters to you. In your next chat, it already knows the context. No need to explain yourself every time.

Trick 2 of 2

Bring over your ChatGPT history. 5 minutes.

If you've been using ChatGPT for a while, your profile already lives there. Projects, tools, the way you work. You can load all of it into Claude right now.

Step by step

1. Download your history from ChatGPT

In ChatGPT: profile icon → Settings → Data Controls → Export data.

Wait for the email. Download the archive and find the conversations.json file inside.

2. Open Claude and attach the file

Start a new chat in Claude. Click the paperclip next to the input field and attach conversations.json.

3. Send the prompt

Paste the text below and send it along with the file.

The prompt: copy it as is

This prompt gives you structure: projects with names, tools, work style. 30 concrete facts instead of vague phrases, so Claude knows who you are right away.

prompt · copy and send with the file

``` Here's a JSON export of my ChatGPT conversations.
Task: build my profile for future conversations.
Rules: - 30 facts max - each fact = one line with numbers and names - skip one-off questions, general knowledge, tokens and passwords - priority: active projects, stack, work style, personal context
Output format: Markdown with sections (Projects / Stack / Style / Context).
If the file is over 5 MB, process the last 200 conversations and tell me how many you skipped.
Save the result to memory. ```
What happens next
Claude reads your entire history and saves 30 key facts about you to memory. From that point on, it knows your context in every new conversation, no explanations needed.
Done both tricks? Here's what's next
  • 10 setup steps: Projects, about-me.md, a master prompt. Set up Claude to fit you once and for all.
