Claude from Russia

Anthropic doesn't operate in Russia: the site won't load and payments don't go through. There's exactly one solution: a VPN. Install ProtonVPN, pick one country (Poland, Kazakhstan, or Georgia), download Claude Desktop, and work as usual. It takes 20–30 minutes, once. After that, everything works like it does for everyone else.

The Short Version

You need three things: ProtonVPN (the free plan is enough to start), Claude Desktop, and one VPN country: Poland, Kazakhstan, or Georgia. Pick a country and stick with it. Pay for Pro through Apple ID; it's the cleanest route.

This isn't "circumventing a block." Anthropic simply doesn't serve Russia, so you sign in as a user from a country where Claude officially operates. Antidetect browsers, ISP proxies, virtual numbers, and Proxifier are not needed.

① VPN

First, <mark>ProtonVPN.</mark>

ProtonVPN is a Swiss service and one of the most reliable out there. There's a free plan, and it's enough to get started. If Anthropic won't load, get the paid Plus plan (~$5/mo): more servers and a more stable connection.

Installation

1. Download ProtonVPN for your system

Go to protonvpn.com, click Download, and choose macOS or Windows.

2. Install it like any other app

Mac: open the downloaded .dmg → drag the ProtonVPN icon into the Applications folder → launch it from Applications. If your Mac asks "Are you sure?", click Open.

Windows: run the .exe → follow the installer prompts → launch ProtonVPN from the Start menu.

3. Create a free account

On first launch, ProtonVPN will ask you to sign in. Click Create account → enter your email → set a password → confirm your email. It's free.

4. Click Quick Connect

The big button on the main screen. The app picks a server for you. Once you're connected, the icon turns green or you'll see "Connected."

5. Check the country: it should be PL, KZ, or GE

Poland, Kazakhstan, and Georgia are your best options: Anthropic doesn't block them, Stripe accepts cards there, and SMS numbers work. If Quick Connect put you in a different country, click the server name and manually pick Poland, Kazakhstan, or Georgia. If one server doesn't work, try the next one in the same country.

6. Open claude.ai: the site should load

This is your check that the VPN works. If it loads, great, move on. If not, switch servers: click the current server's name → pick another one in the same country. Sometimes it takes 2–3 servers to find one that works.

The main rule: one country, permanently

Picked Poland? Use only Poland. Don't hop between Poland, Kazakhstan, and Georgia. Anthropic's anti-fraud systems see a user "relocating" from country to country every day and flag it as suspicious. First-month bans are almost always caused by this.

② Claude Desktop

Download the app <mark>with your VPN on.</mark>

Claude Desktop is Anthropic's native app. It works over ProtonVPN with no extra configuration: on macOS and Windows, ProtonVPN routes all system traffic, apps included. No Proxifier needed.

If Desktop won't launch

Happens on some setups. Don't fight it: open claude.ai in your browser. Same features, same Claude, the only difference is the interface.

Installation

1. Open claude.ai/download, with your VPN on

Make sure ProtonVPN is still connected, or the site won't open. claude.ai/download

2. Download the version for your OS

The Download for Mac or Download for Windows button. The file is ~100–200 MB, so wait for it to finish downloading completely.

3. Install it like any other app

Mac: open the .dmg → drag Claude into Applications → launch from Applications.

Windows: run the installer → follow the prompts → launch Claude from the Start menu.

4. Open Claude Desktop: you should see a Sign in screen

If the app didn't open automatically, find it in Applications (Mac) or the Start menu (Windows) and launch it.

③ Signing in to Claude

5 minutes. <mark>Done.</mark>

With ProtonVPN on, Anthropic sees you as a user from your chosen country. Registration is standard: email and password. You don't need a virtual SMS number, a separate inbox, or account warm-up, as long as you don't change your VPN country.

1. Click Sign in: a browser window opens with the form

That's normal: Claude Desktop authenticates through your system browser. Don't close it until you've finished signing in.

2. No account yet? Click Create account

Enter your email, set a password, confirm your email. The confirmation may land in Spam, so check there if you don't see it in your inbox.

3. Go back to Claude Desktop

After you sign in via the browser, the app picks up the session automatically. If it doesn't, click Sign in again.

4. Done: time for your first prompt

If you see the chat interface with a sidebar, everything works.

④ Paying for Claude Pro

The hard part. <mark>Three ways that work.</mark>

Anthropic doesn't accept Russian cards directly. There are three proven routes that work right now.

Method 1 · the easiest ### Via Apple ID

It works because Apple takes the money and then passes it on to Anthropic. Anthropic never sees your card at all. This is the cleanest route for Russian users and the only one where Stripe can't fail on you.

1. Set up an Apple ID in the right country

Create an Apple ID for Kazakhstan, Poland, or Georgia (the same country as your VPN). Or ask a friend abroad.

2. Add money to the Apple ID

Via an App Store gift card. You can buy one at kupikod.com or gift-cards24.ru. Expect to pay face value plus 10–15%.

3. Download the Claude app from the App Store

On an iPhone or Mac. Sign in with your email.

4. Buy Pro right inside the app

The subscription is charged to your Apple ID. No card checks, no Stripe.

Method 2 ### A virtual card

Open a virtual card with a service that works with Russia. Link it to Claude. Use the card's country as your billing address. Stripe sometimes declines these; if it doesn't go through, take the Apple ID route.

Method 3 ### Ask a friend abroad

On Claude, one account = one card, but the card doesn't have to be yours. If you know someone in Europe, the US, or Kazakhstan, ask them to pay with their card. Agree on paying them back in crypto or by transfer.

Backup and insurance

What to do <mark>if your account goes down.</mark>

Using Claude from Russia violates Anthropic's geographic restrictions no matter how carefully you set things up. The risk is permanent: not "if," but "when." Prepare in advance.

1. Export your chats once a week

Settings → Privacy → Export data. Anthropic emails you an archive of all your conversations. Without a backup, you lose months of working context.

2. Set up a second, cold account

On a separate email, with the same ProtonVPN and the same country. Log in once a week to keep it "alive." If your main account goes down, switching takes 5 minutes instead of two weeks of warming up a new one.

3. Turn on 2FA for Gmail and save your backup codes

If Google locks your email account, you lose your Claude account too (recovery without your primary email is nearly impossible). Settings → Security → 2-Step Verification → Backup codes. Store them offline: on paper or in a local password manager, not in the cloud.

The golden rule

Never open Claude <mark>without your VPN.</mark>

Not even "for a quick peek." One visit from a Russian IP and your account is gone for good. ProtonVPN only, always.

One more thing: one country, permanently. Picked Poland? Use Poland. Not Kazakhstan today and Georgia tomorrow. Consistency beats "convenience."
