Claude styles and instructions: set your business tone once

You know the drill: you open a fresh chat with Claude, and it writes like a polite assistant from a manual again. So at the start of every conversation you explain who you are, what you do, and what tone you need. After a week it gets old. The good news: you can set this up once, and from then on Claude keeps the right tone on its own.

There are two tools for this: response styles and persistent instructions. They are different things and work in different ways.

Why does Claude keep answering in the wrong tone?

By default Claude knows nothing about you. Every new chat starts from a blank page: it does not remember that you own a coffee shop, that your clients use a casual voice, that you hate long intros. So it answers in an averaged way, meant for everyone at once.

The tempting fix is to paste the same block about yourself at the top of each chat. That works, but it eats time and space. It is better to tell Claude once and for good.

What are styles, and how are they different from instructions?

A style answers the question of how to write: long or short, dry or lively, bullet points or flowing text. In claude.ai (the web app at claude.ai) there are built-in styles: normal, concise, explanatory, formal. You switch it right above the input box, and Claude changes its manner without changing the substance of the answer.

Instructions answer a different question: what should Claude always remember about me. Who you are, what you do, who your audience is, which words to avoid. This is not about manner, it is about context, the background facts Claude factors into every reply.

An easy way to remember it: style is the form, instructions are the facts about you. Together they produce an answer that sounds like yours and is grounded in your situation.

How do you set persistent instructions once?

In your profile settings in claude.ai there is a field for personal preferences: what Claude should keep in mind in conversations with you. Open settings, find the profile and preferences section, and write a short note about yourself there.

Skip the filler. Specifics win. Weak: "I am an entrepreneur, answer well." Strong: "I run a nail salon with four staff. I address clients and staff casually. I dislike long intros, get to the point and use steps. No corporate jargon."

After that Claude already knows the basics in any new chat and does not make you repeat yourself. Update the note whenever something in the business changes.

How do you build your own style for a specific task?

There are four built-in styles, but you can make your own. Claude can build a style from a description or from a sample of your writing. The second option is stronger: give it two or three of your posts or emails that you like and ask it to write the same way. Claude works out how you build sentences and holds that manner.

It helps to keep a separate style for each recurring format. For example, a "Telegram post" style with short paragraphs and no formality, and a "partner email" style that is stricter. Switch to the one you need before the task and skip the explanation.

How do you set instructions inside a project?

If you use Projects, the folders in claude.ai that hold files and shared context for a series of chats, each project has its own instructions. Put there what matters only for that topic, not for every conversation.

An example. A "Sales" project gets the instruction: "Here we work with cold leads. Friendly tone, no pressure. Always offer a next step." A "Reports" project gets a different one: "Numbers and facts only, no emotion, use tables." So the same Claude behaves differently depending on the task you are solving.

Where should you start today?

Sit down for ten minutes and do three things. First: write a short note about yourself and your business into personal preferences. Second: give Claude a couple of your best texts and ask it to build a style from them. Third: if you run several directions, set up projects and give each its own instructions.

After that you just work, and Claude keeps the context on its own. The savings are invisible by the minute but real by the week: you stop explaining the same thing in circles.
