How Much Does Claude Code Cost, and Do You Pay Extra?

People often assume Claude Code is a separate paid product you buy on top of your Claude subscription. It is not. It is a tool that ships with Claude, and in most cases there is no extra price for it. Here is where the cost actually comes from, and what to pick if you run a business instead of writing code.

What is Claude Code

Claude Code is an agentic tool from Anthropic: it reads your files, edits them, runs commands, and connects to outside services. It works in four places: the terminal (command line), the VS Code and JetBrains code editors, a standalone desktop app, and right in your browser at claude.ai/code. All of this is spelled out on the official Claude Code overview page.

The word "code" in the name sounds intimidating, but plenty of the jobs have nothing to do with programming: clean up a messy folder, rename a hundred documents by one rule, build a report out of an export, tidy up a project. You do not need to write code for any of that. You describe the task in plain language.

Do you pay for Claude Code separately

Short answer: no, Claude Code has no separate price. The tool itself is free and you just install it with one command. What you pay for is access to the Claude model, and that access comes in two forms.

The first is a paid Claude subscription. The official documentation says it plainly: most Claude Code surfaces require a Claude subscription or an Anthropic Console account, and the desktop app requires a paid subscription. So if you already pay for Claude to use chat and projects, you already have Claude Code. There is nothing extra to buy.

The second is pay-as-you-go through the API (the interface other programs use to reach the model) in the Anthropic Console. Here a meter runs: you pay for the tasks you actually send, with no monthly fee.

Subscription versus pay-as-you-go

These are two ways to pay for the same access.

A subscription is a fixed monthly amount. You pay once and use it without counting each request. It is predictable and convenient when you reach for Claude almost every day.

Pay-as-you-go through the API has no monthly fee, but every task costs money depending on its size. It suits people who use it rarely or who wire Claude into their own software.

For the terminal, VS Code, and JetBrains the docs also mention third-party providers, but that is a developer topic, not something a typical business owner needs to weigh.

What to choose if you do not write code

If you want Claude Code for real work rather than software development, the logic is simple. You are probably already considering a Claude subscription for chat, projects, and artifacts anyway. That same subscription unlocks Claude Code, so there is no separate decision to make.

The easiest place to start is the desktop app or the browser version at claude.ai/code. Nothing to install through the command line, it opens like any normal program. Leave the terminal and editor extensions for later, if your tasks grow into them.

How much money, and where to check

Anthropic keeps the exact figures on one page and updates them from time to time, so copying numbers here would be pointless: they would go stale and mislead you. Check current rates on the official Claude pricing page, which lists both subscription prices and API terms.

The thing to remember: installing Claude Code costs nothing, and the whole cost is the cost of your Claude plan, which you are likely paying for anyway. There will be no separate Claude Code line on your bill.
