Record a skill: Claude learns your task from a screen recording
On July 21 Claude got Record a skill: record your screen, explain out loud what you do, and Claude turns it into a reusable skill. Here is how to use it.
On July 21 Claude got a feature that changes how you teach AI your tasks. It's called Record a skill: you record your screen, do the task and explain out loud what you're doing. Claude analyzes the recording and turns it into a skill that performs the task on its own from then on. Instead of a long written instruction: show it once, like you would to an intern.
How does it work?
- Open Cowork in the Claude app for Mac.
- Click "+" in the input box and pick "Record a skill". Second path: Customize, Skills section, Add button, "Record your screen".
- On first launch macOS asks for two permissions: Accessibility (click tracking) and Screen Recording. Grant both.
- Hit "Start recording" and do the task as usual, narrating your logic out loud. Recording runs up to 10 minutes.
- Hit "Done". Claude parses the recording and proposes a ready skill (or edits to an existing one). You review the text and save.
The voice narration is optional, but it's what carries the rules invisible in clicks: "if the amount is over fifty thousand, I send it for approval". Without narration Claude sees what you do; with it, Claude understands why.

What to know before recording?
- The whole screen is captured. Close anything private and don't type passwords during the recording.
- Video and audio are not stored: after processing only a set of session screenshots remains, in the "Recorded demonstration" step.
- Availability: Cowork in the Claude app for Mac only, Pro, Max and Team plans. Not on the web, Windows or the free plan.
Why does a business owner care?
The most valuable tasks to automate are usually the most boring to describe: sorting incoming invoices, moving leads into a table, the weekly summary. Nobody wants to write instructions for them, so they stay manual for years. Record a skill removes that barrier: do the task once with recording on, and you've got a worker who can repeat it.
The rule of thumb: if a task can be shown in ten minutes, it can be recorded into a skill.

Not required, but strongly recommended. Clicks show what you do, and the voice explains why: rules like "if the amount is over the threshold, send for approval" only make it into the skill through narration.
Per Anthropic's documentation, video and audio are not stored after processing. What remains is a set of session screenshots in the "Recorded demonstration" step inside the skill. Still, keep passwords and sensitive data off screen: the entire screen is captured.
