Cowork now runs in the browser and on your phone: what changes
Anthropic opened Cowork on web and mobile: a task keeps running with your laptop closed, and scheduled work needs no device online. Here is what it changes.
On July 7, 2026 Anthropic opened Cowork in the browser and on the phone. Until then it lived only in the desktop app, which meant it was available to those who managed to install it. Now you can start a task at your desk, check on it from your phone in a queue, and pick up the result in the evening. Here is what that changes in practice.
What exactly changed?
Cowork is the mode where Claude doesn't reply in a chat but does multi-step work end to end: it plans the steps itself, goes through your connected services and hands back a finished document, spreadsheet or deck.
On July 7 Anthropic launched it on the web at claude.ai and in the mobile app on iOS and Android. It's a beta, starting with Max subscribers, with other plans promised over the following weeks and no fixed dates. Sources: TechCrunch and VentureBeat. There is no separate app to install: on mobile, Cowork sits in the sidebar of the regular Claude app.
The real change isn't the mobile version itself, it's that sessions moved to Anthropic's servers. A task keeps running with your laptop closed, and scheduled work fires even when none of your devices are online (Help Net Security). When Claude hits a decision only a human should make, it sends a notification and waits. Anthropic puts it this way: nothing ships until you've reviewed and approved it (VentureBeat).
Chat and Cowork also merged into one window on web and desktop: projects and generated files are now shared across both modes.
Why does this matter if you don't code?
Alongside the launch Anthropic published data on 1.2 million anonymized Cowork sessions from more than 600,000 organizations, sampled in May. The picture runs against the usual assumption about AI agents: software development accounted for 8.7% of sessions. The top category was business process and operations at 33.4%: pulling scattered updates into one report, reconciling spreadsheets, building an onboarding checklist. Content creation and copywriting came second at 16.4%: drafts, decks, posts, proposals (TechCrunch).
That is exactly the work around the work that eats a founder's day while sitting in nobody's job description. Cowork was built for it, and the numbers back that up.
An example from the announcement itself: schedule client prep for 6 a.m. on Monday. Claude works through the email threads, transcripts and recent news, builds the briefing doc, and leaves the follow-up email drafted but unsent. You review it over coffee (TechCrunch).
What should you do right now?
Anthropic doubled Cowork usage limits through August 5, 2026 (Help Net Security). That's a window to try the mode on something bigger than usual without hitting a limit halfway through.
- Open Claude and look for Cowork in the sidebar. If it isn't there, the rollout hasn't reached your plan yet.
- Take a task that eats an hour of routine and has steps to it: assembling a report from several sources, going through a folder of documents, building a client dossier before a meeting.
- Describe the result in words, not a sequence of clicks. Cowork plans on its own; it needs a goal and boundaries.
- Don't sit and watch it. Close the laptop and come back when the notification arrives. That's the whole point of the mode.
Where is desktop still stronger?
Web and mobile don't replace the desktop app, they extend it. The full experience stays on desktop: that's where Claude works with local files on your computer and with the browser. The web version covers a different case: a work laptop that won't let you install software, someone else's computer, a tablet (Help Net Security).
Simple rule: deep work with files on disk stays on desktop, while assigning tasks and checking on them moves to the phone.
