What Is Claude, Explained Simply for Business Owners

You have probably run into Claude already: someone shared a screenshot where it wrote a client email in a minute, or praised it for pulling risks out of a contract. But what it actually is, and why it matters to you as a business owner, usually stays unexplained. Let us fix that, without the technical fog.

Who made Claude and where does it live?

Claude is an AI assistant (AI, artificial intelligence). It was built by Anthropic, an American lab focused on safe artificial intelligence. Under the hood Claude runs on an LLM (large language model, a program trained on a huge amount of text to compose meaningful answers).

The simplest way to try it: open claude.ai on your phone or computer, sign in with your email, and start typing into the chat box like a messenger. Nothing to install. There is also a Claude Desktop app if you prefer a separate window, but a browser is enough to get started.

Inside, Claude is not one model but a family: lighter and faster versions for simple tasks, and more powerful ones for harder reasoning. As a user you do not have to sort this out on day one. A sensible default is picked for you, and you can switch later with one click.

What can Claude actually do?

The honest version: Claude is a conversation partner that is very good with text and documents. Here is what that means in a business owner's week.

You describe a task in plain words and it does it: write a post, a proposal, a reply to an unhappy client, an instruction for staff. You can attach a file (a contract, a price list, an export, a spreadsheet) and ask it to break the thing down: where the risks are, what is unclear, which numbers do not add up. You can even dictate your thoughts out loud and have it turn them into a structured plan.

One key point: Claude does not just hand you a single answer and go quiet. You can push back and refine. Do not like the tone of a letter? Say "make it drier, cut the fluff," and it rewrites. This is closer to talking with a sharp assistant than to typing into a search bar.

It also handles images and screenshots: show it a photo of a table or a screenshot of an error, and it will read what is there and explain it. And through connectors (a way to link Claude to your work services, such as email or calendar) it can not only advise but pull data from your tools.

How is Claude different from a regular search engine?

Search finds links, and then you read ten tabs and assemble the answer in your head. Claude assembles the answer for you: you state the task in human language, it returns a usable result you can put to work right away.

The difference is also about context. With a search engine you start each query from scratch. Claude remembers the whole conversation within a single chat: you can dump the details once, then refine ten times without repeating yourself. For real work this changes everything. You bring one email to a finished state in five messages instead of writing it over and over.

There is a flip side worth stating plainly. Claude can be wrong, and it sometimes confidently invents facts that were never there. So numbers, dates and legal wording always need your own check. It speeds up the work but does not take responsibility for the result off your shoulders.

Claude vs ChatGPT: what is the plain difference?

They are two separate products from two separate companies, built along similar lines: a chat where you type a task. ChatGPT was made by OpenAI, Claude by Anthropic. Both write text, break down documents and take the routine off your plate.

People who use both often say Claude holds long documents more carefully and is more cautious in its wording, and that its writing feels less like template robot-speak. But there is no universal "which is better." It is like choosing between two good laptops. Rather than arguing about it online, run one concrete task through both and see whose answer sits better with you.

The main takeaway: if you already accept the idea of "type the task in words, get a ready draft," then Claude works on the same logic and there is nothing new to relearn.

How do you start if you have never used it?

Do not try to automate the whole business at once. Take one task you do by hand every week and hand it to Claude. A reply to a review, a draft post, a review of an incoming contract, a short newsletter blurb. One task carried all the way to a working result teaches you more than an hour of reading articles.

Phrase the task the way you would brief a capable intern: who you are, what the business is, what you need as output, in what tone. The more context you give, the sharper the answer. If you do not like the result, do not give up. Say exactly what is off and ask for a redo.
